Distinguished and Famous people from Balwyn
Balwyn's Maranoa Botanic Gardens owe their origins and development to people who took Australian plants seriously when they were far less fashionable in suburban gardens. Their work left a public collection with a long life beyond its private beginnings.
🌿 John Middleton Watson
John Middleton Watson bought land in Balwyn in 1901 and began a garden of Australian and New Zealand native plants. That interest ran against the strongly European taste of many gardens of the period. The former City of Camberwell later purchased the property, which opened to the public in 1926. Watson's private project became the foundation of Maranoa Botanic Gardens, allowing a personal enthusiasm for plants to become a shared local resource.
🌿 Arthur Swaby
Arthur Swaby was among the enthusiasts whose knowledge helped develop Maranoa's Australian plant collection. He was also prominent in the formation of the Society for Growing Australian Plants, later known in Victoria as the Australian Plants Society. The society's account of its relationship with Maranoa recognises both contributions. His local legacy lies in helping gardeners value native flora and in supporting a place where those plants could be seen growing, rather than simply read about.
📖 Paul Brickhill
Paul Brickhill was born at Balwyn in 1916 before his family moved to Sydney, where he began a career in journalism. As a fighter pilot he was shot down and imprisoned at Stalag Luft III, where he gathered fellow airmen’s stories and assisted preparations for an escape. Claustrophobia kept him out of the tunnel itself. The experience became the basis of The Great Escape; The Dam Busters and Reach for the Sky followed. His reporting skills helped turn complex events into compelling popular narratives, with books that later found another enormous audience through film.
