Balwyn is a suburb located in the eastern part of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The suburb originated as an orchard farming area, and many of the streets in the area today are named after fruit trees. The town gets its name from the Balwyn House, a Victorian mansion which was built in the area in 1850s and is now a Registered Historic Place.

The suburb was first surveyed in 1857, and by the 1870s, the area had become a popular summer retreat thanks to its pleasant climate and lush greenery. In the 1880s, the railroad arrived, making it easier to access the town and lead to increased development.

During the 20th century, Balwyn grew rapidly, thanks to the influx of people who moved to the area seeking a quieter, more suburban lifestyle. The town's population remained relatively small, however, and today, it has a reputation for being one of the more affluent suburbs in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

Balwyn has had a number of significant landmarks over the years, including the famous Palace cinema, which opened in 1916 and was the first cinema to be built in the area. The cinema was also notable as the first cinema in Melbourne to have a sound system installed, allowing it to show 'talking pictures.' Today, the cinema is a local landmark and is still in operation.

Balwyn is also home to a number of well-known schools, such as the Balwyn Primary School and the Balwyn High School. These schools have a long history in the area and are well-regarded for their academic achievements.

Throughout its history, Balwyn has remained a popular place to live for those seeking a quieter lifestyle away from the city. Today, the town is known for its beautiful homes, well-maintained parks, and excellent schools. Its rich history can be seen throughout the town, from its beautiful gardens to its historic landmarks.
